We all love a night on the tiles but choosing them is not quite as much fun. This is mainly because there seem to be so many to choose from.
Every colour on the spectrum is available and you need to decide if you want ceramic, terracotta or stone. The type of tile you choose will affect the look of your bathroom. They each have different qualities and will change the depth and texture of your bathroom’s design.
You can also do fun things with your tiles that will make them stand out in quirky and interesting ways.
Choosing ceramic tiles
If there were pop charts for tiles then ceramic would be at number one. They are the Madonna of the tile world having been at the top for a long, long time.
Like the queen of pop they have a durability that lasts and this is their greatest quality. With daily showers and kids splashing in the bath they have to be dependable and strong.
They are easy to maintain and clean and are resistant to germs. If you want a tile that will last then this is the type to go for.
Choosing terracotta tiles
Bring the spirit of the Mediterranean to your bathroom with terracotta tiles. If the rustic look is your thing then make sure you go for top quality terracotta tiles.
They do make a room look natural and high grade terracotta will last forever. You only have to watch Time Team to see the number of times they find terracotta tiles from Roman times on their digs.
However, if you go for the best it will cost a bit more than the ceramic option.
Choosing stone tiles
This is the more expensive end of the tile market. In terms of stone we are talking here about marble, slate or granite. They will help to create a super glamorous feel to your bathroom but will also make a bit of a dent in your pocket.
They also require a bit more work than their ceramic cousins. Like a supermodel they need a bit of looking after to their job properly. You may have to apply a seal to them to stop them absorbing water as they can be porous.
You may consider they are worth a bit of effort because like Kate Moss and Naomi Campbell they do look beautiful.
Having fun with your tiles
Tiles don’t have to be boring. Even if you have simple white tiles there are things you can do to make them a bit more interesting.
You could add waterproof stickers to them and they don’t have to be childish. If you have splash back tiles on your basin you could stick some sea shells to them to give your bathroom a sea side feel.
Or you could create a mosaic of tiles like the Romans did. It’s up to you.
