Five Reasons Not to Have a Shower

You don’t need to be an eco-warrior to avoid the shower. It can actually be good for your body.

Personal hygiene is one of those topics that people don’t like to talk about. Most of us like to be clean and to smell nice but do we really need to shower every day?

Showering daily is a very new activity for the human body. Two or three generations ago most people would just have a bath once a week so the idea that you would flood your body with water every day is quite unusual.

Drying out skin

The body does not cope very well with getting regularly wet. Paradoxically if you have a shower every day your skin will become dry.

This will actually make your body become more wrinkled. So, ironically, showering daily will make your body look worse.

Your body’s skin needs to keep its natural oils if it to remain fresh and vibrant. By putting it under water every day and using soaps and lotions you can remove these vital oils.

Water conservation

You don’t have to be an environmental champion to want to reduce the amount of water you use. Until the recent downpours many counties of Britain had hosepipe bans. In future years as global warming increases water shortages are bound to increase.

So if you can do your bit for the planet then that has to be a good reason to give it a miss.

Good bacteria

You will have seen the adverts about good and bad bacteria that exist in your stomach. You also have some superhero bacteria on your skin that are ready to fight off any baddies.

This means that you don’t have to shower every day as your body has the natural defences to fight off any bad bacteria.

Toxic chemicals

Professor Anne Steinman published a study about the chemicals that are in personal care products. On average she found seventeen unlisted chemicals in a number of soaps and shampoos. What is really worrying is the fact that nearly a quarter of these chemicals are classified as toxic.

So the product you think is cleaning and helping you could be poisoning you.

Staying natural

Fill a basin and wash yourself with a flannel in those smelly areas on those days you don’t need a shower. You can then save your skin, your natural oils and the planet by avoiding the daily shower.
