People love those out-take TV programmes where actors and presenters make mistakes. It Will Be All Right On The Night and Outtake TV are incredibly popular. Something that is not popular is makeover bathroom bloopers.
Errors in bathroom design are not necessarily funny. In some cases bad bathroom design can actually cause distress and here are the mistakes to avoid.
Making your bathroom too small
If you think that the cupboard under the stairs will make a great space for a second toilet you might want to reconsider that thought. Take into account big Auntie Mary who is not as slim as you and who might have her knees her against the door and her sides against the wall when she pays a visit.
It might be funny to watch but she won’t be too happy.
Not having the right budget
As project manager for your bathroom makeover you have to make sure you have enough money to do the job correctly. You don’t want to be like some dumb Apprentice wannabee and find that all your money has been spent and you only have half the bathroom built.
Cowboy installation
A badly installed bathroom is a potential death trap and that certainly is no laughing matter. When you have a space where electricity and water can mix you have to make sure that everything is fitted safely and securely.
Nowhere to put anything
Watching someone fall over something can be funny. Watching someone fall and then crack their head open on a basin is not quite as hilarious. If you don’t put in spaces for storage you will inevitably have bathroom clutter which could be dangerous.
Not thinking about the future
This does not mean that you have to make your bathroom bland for fear of it going out of fashion. But when you buy bathroom mirrors, cabinets and vanity units try to avoid stuff that will date quickly and go for solid, well made accessories.
Going for fashion fads
Step back if you see some fancy basin or shower design and think about whether you will be able to live with it in five or ten years time. Remember avocado coloured baths were all the rage and now they are an embarrassment.
Forgetting the bathroom is wet
This does seem to be a dumb thing to do but you would be surprised about the number of people who wallpaper their bathroom with the wrong sort of paper that then, surprise-surprise, it starts to peel because the bathroom has got a tad humid and wet.
Ignoring the planet
Global warming will not be at the forefront of your mind when you makeover your bathroom unless you are an environmental activist. But you should think a bit green when you make your choices. There are environmentally friendly toilets and shower heads which restrict the amount of water you use which will save you money if water meters are fitted to your home.
Forgetting about light
Some bathrooms are too bright and some are not bright enough. The most common mistake is to put the bathroom mirror opposite a window meaning that when you shave all you see is a silhouette.
Having no ventilation
Bathrooms can smell and while you may want to leave it ten minutes if there is no ventilation the stink will linger. Make sure you can clear the air or your new bathroom will not be a pleasant place to visit.
