Toilet Trouble

In 2008, police in Kansas arrived at a house after receiving reports of a woman feeling unwell. Upon arrival, it appeared that the woman had been sat on the toilet and had not moved for two years. The 35-year-old woman’s skin had grown around the toilet seat and, initially, she refused medical treatment however was soon persuaded and was taken to hospital.

According to her boyfriend, he asked her to come out each day but her reply would be, “Maybe tomorrow”.

Incy Wincy Spider Climbed Up the Toilet Bowl

Numerous videos have emerged in recent months proving to be an arachnophobes worst nightmare. Spiders lurking in toilets. The creepy-crawlies are thought to be Huntsman or Redback spiders, indigenous to Australia. One of the spine-tingling clips shows a spider being flushed…albeit unsuccessfully as it continues to climb against the force of the water pressure to the safety of the underside of the bowl.

Moral of the story? Always flush before you go.

WARNING: Do not watch the following video if you are scared of spiders.

White House Pets

John Quincy Adams was the sixth president of the United States, in office from 1825 to 1829. During this time he was given a gift by French aristocrat Marquis de Lafayette in the form of a live alligator. Adams housed the gator in the White House’s unfinished East Room and the nearby bathroom, relishing in showing the reptile off to disbelieving visitors.

In later years, Herbert Hoover’s son Allan would invite two house guests over to wander loose on the grounds of the White House to scare unsuspecting companions. The terrible twosome? Only a pair of alligators of course!

Bathroom Critters

Greeting strange and exotic animals in restrooms is nothing new. One Kansas resident decided she needed to go to the bathroom whilst visiting the Bicentennial Center when she came face-to-face with a circus tiger who had briefly escaped.

Across the pond however, newspapers today have confirmed that a teenager in Rochdale came across a 6ft albino snake in her bathroom and her mother had to dial 999 in order for the police to come in and remove it. The reptile, thought to be a northern pine snake, is now being cared for by the RSPCA.

When Will September End?

In 2009, a radio station in Canada locked a woman in a bathroom, in complete darkness for over 70 hours whilst playing Greenday’s ‘When September Ends’ on repeat. It was part of a competition they were running called The Really Tough Contest for a chance to win $50,000.

The song was played approximately 22 thousand times and when asked how long she thought she had been in there, the contestant answered four hours, when in fact, it was well over 13.

Our Quackers Queen

In 2001, The Sun, reported that Queen Elizabeth II kept a rubber duck in her bathroom that wore an inflatable crown. It was revealed after a workman was called in to repaint her bathroom and spotted the bath time companion on the side. The palace refused to confirm or deny the report however it was thought that one of her grandchildren may have bought it for her as a joke.

The story also prompted sales of rubber ducks in the UK to increase by 80% for a short time afterwards.

Wrong End Of The Stick

Toilets in Ancient Rome were allegedly used as a social setting for gossip, debates and discussions with over one hundred public latrines in existence in first century Rome. Marble seats, Greek mythology and running water may have been only a few of the things on offer in the latrines but separate cubicles and toilet paper were certainly not.

Sitting next to a friend was commonplace and sponge sticks were located in front. Sponge sticks (or spongia) were sea-sponges attached to a long stick, soaked in sea water. The sponges were shared by everyone in the latrine.

Once it had been used, the sponge was then scraped against the stone hole and the remnants would fall into flowing water ready for the spongia to be used by the next person. Nice.

Food, Glorious Food

Ever got hungry whilst sitting on the toilet? Well, now there’s a solution. If you live anywhere near Taipei in Taiwan, that is.

The Modern Toilet Restaurant is a restaurant chain where you can dine like a king… literally, by sitting on the porcelain throne. The walls are covered with showerheads, plungers hand from the ceiling and they even have a faeces shaped light.

Eat from a bathtub, drink from a urinal and lunch from a loo and after all that (if you’ve got the stomach for it, that is) you can even dine on dessert… which just so happens to be poo-inspired ice cream.

Closet Criminal

It was reported in 2008 that a woman had been arrested in Japan after reportedly living in a man’s closet, undetected for over a year.

The 58-year-old homeless woman sneaked in when she found the door had been unlocked and only left the closet to take food from the fridge and to use the shower and toilet when the man wasn’t home. He grew suspicious when he noticed food going missing and installed security cameras linked to his mobile phone.

After spotting the woman, he called police who found her behind a sliding door on a futon and next to several drinks bottles. She was later arrested for trespassing.

At least she wasn’t hiding behind the shower curtain…Now that would have been a fright.

The Sound Princess

To disguise the sound of bodily functions, women in Japan have a special device that is installed in many public bathrooms that produces the sound of flushing water. The practice was introduced after women would continually flush the toilets, wasting a large amount of water in the process. The device is activated by either pressing a button or via motion sensor.
